Jenny Reddin began her creative journey as a painter, but over time found the two-dimensional surface limiting. The desire to break free from the confines of the flat canvas led her on a transformative path. During the COVID lockdowns, a serendipitous encounter with a neighbour who taught her to weld sparked a new and enduring passion – one that would see her trade brushes for welding torches and pigments for steel.
Her early years as a resourceful student, sewing her own clothes out of necessity, laid an unexpected but essential foundation for her sculptural practice today. That instinct to cut, fold and shape materials now guides her as she coaxes flat sheets of metal into dynamic, expressive forms. Reddin’s work straddles the line between discipline and spontaneity, often reflecting organic or textile-like forms rendered in the most industrial of mediums. Her sculptures – at once intricate and bold – speak to a deep understanding of both material and movement.
A rising force in Australian contemporary sculpture, Reddin has been a three-time finalist in the prestigious Yering Station Sculpture Exhibition, as well as a finalist in Swell Sculpture Festival and Hanging Rock Sculpture Exhibition. In 2024, she was awarded the Acquisitive Prize at Sculpture in the Gardens, Wollongong Botanic Gardens. Her wall-based sculptures are also permanently installed at Spring Place on Lonsdale Street, Melbourne.
