Quadrivial means ‘where four paths meet’. In medieval education, it also referred to the number related studies of arithmetic (pure number), geometry (number in space), music (rhythm, number in time) and astronomy (number in space and time).
In the Quadrivial sculptures, Jenny Green employs the tetrahedron – 4 sided triangular pyramids – to explore aspects of number, rhythm and movement.
The four points of a tetrahedron are equidistant. Each of its sides sits flat no matter how it’s turned – in a state of stability. Combining the tetrahedrons upends the equilibrium and sparks a tension between stability and the passion for change.
About the Artist:
Jenny sees her sculptures as ‘drawings in space’ evoking mood and motion. Typically, her works are abstract, yet they’re often influenced by the figure. While the media she uses may be industrial, her sculptures are light and airy. Using lines, curves, shapes and colour she aims to capture a moment, a movement, a feeling.
