Ross Cameron is an Australian sculptor working in granite, corten steel, and composite media, based at his Studio 15 in Tanja on the NSW Far South Coast. He holds a Bachelor of Visual Arts, majoring in Sculpture, from the ANU School of Art, where he studied under Ron Robertson-Swann, Ante Dabro, Wendy Teakel, and Michael LeGrand.
Ross brings a multidisciplinary background to his practice, including as Director of the Bega Valley Regional Gallery and co-founder of Splinters Theatre of Spectacle in Canberra.
His current body of work explores a sense of primal connection, incorporating primitive glyph forms that evoke an instinctive, elemental response in the viewer. “I try to reconnect to the primal, the deep, ‘human as animal’ feelings and connections that are perhaps lost for some of us,” Ross explains. “For me, a successful work is one that reflects, resonates, and reconnects the viewer to a personal truth meaningful only to themselves”
Ross’s process often begins with a small observation scaled into something monumental. Working from pencil sketches through to plasticine models, he finds that some ideas transform better at scale.
Ross’s most recent work, Balance of Being (BoB) explores choice in a world where decisions have big consequences.
Ross’s Tide Spiral, a large public work, can be viewed at Short Point Headland Merimbula. He is a regular exhibitor at Sculpture in the Valley, Sculpture Bermagui, and in 2023 his work, Father and Child, received a Highly Commended from judge Wendy Teakel.
Ross is accomplished in both granite and marble carving, and bronze casting, undertaking the entire casting process himself at his foundry at Studio 15, where he also runs bronze casting workshops. He welcomes private commissions.
